YYYY-MM (2024-03), YYYY (2024), MMM YYYY (Mar 2024), MMMM YYYY (March 2024), or 'present'/'now'/'current' for ongoing roles. The parser is flexible — pick one format and stick with it.

What counts as a gap?

Any period of more than 0 months between the end of one role and the start of the next. Even a 1-month gap is flagged so you can prepare an explanation, though short gaps rarely raise questions.

How do I explain a gap positively?

Frame it as intentional: travel, family care, learning, freelancing, sabbatical, or job search. Avoid defensiveness. 'I took 6 months off to care for a family member, then returned fully refreshed' is fine. 'I couldn't find a job' is not.

Are gaps a dealbreaker?

Rarely. Most recruiters understand that careers have natural breaks. Long unexplained gaps (12+ months) without context are the bigger red flag — proactively address them in your cover letter or first interview.
